Florida Braces for Tropical Storm Milton as Governor DeSantis Declares State of Emergency
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency on Saturday as Tropical Storm Milton formed in the Gulf of Mexico, posing a potential threat to the state in the coming days. This comes as many Floridians are still recovering from the impacts of Hurricane Helene.
“With communities still grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, we are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents,” Governor DeSantis stated. “State resources are being mobilized to support local efforts in debris removal, search and rescue, power restoration, and road clearing.”
The state of emergency encompasses a wide swath of Florida, including counties where popular tourist destinations like Disney World and Universal Orlando are located. While the storm’s exact path remains uncertain, authorities are urging residents and visitors to stay vigilant and prepared.
The counties affected are: Brevard, Broward, Charlotte, Citrus, Collier, DeSoto, Flagler, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Marion, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Sarasota, Seminole, St. Johns, St. Lucie, Sumter, and Volusia.

Potential Impact on Central Florida’s Theme Parks
Both Disney World and Universal Orlando have comprehensive hurricane preparedness plans in place. These plans include procedures for securing rides and attractions, providing shelter for guests if necessary, and communicating updates to visitors.
In the past, both resorts have temporarily closed or adjusted operating hours in anticipation of severe weather. Visitors planning trips to the theme parks in the coming days are advised to monitor official resort websites and social media channels for the latest information and potential operational changes.
Statewide Preparations Underway
Governor DeSantis’s declaration enables the swift deployment of resources for rescue operations, evacuations, sheltering, and the provision of essential supplies. It also facilitates the state’s ability to seek federal assistance should the need arise.
“We are committed to ensuring that Florida is fully prepared to respond to the challenges posed by Tropical Storm Milton,” Governor DeSantis affirmed. “Our priority is the safety of our citizens, and we urge everyone in the potentially affected areas to heed the guidance of local officials and take necessary precautions.”
The Florida Division of Emergency Management and the Florida Department of Transportation are actively coordinating personnel and resources to bolster local communities’ preparedness efforts. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the storm’s progress and have their hurricane plans in place.
