First Photos Show Angelina Jolie as Thena in Marvel’s ‘Eternals‘. Since the formal announcement that Marvel’s Eternals was in productions, fans have eagerly awaited a sneak peek of the films cast in action. New photos have leaked from the set and give us a first-look at Angelina Jolie’s “Thena.”
Though the photos are not the best quality, we can clearly see Angelina Jolie dressed in one of her costumes as Thena. “Thena is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. She first appeared in The Eternals #5 and was created by Jack Kirby. She is a member of the Eternals, a human offshoot race in the Marvel Universe. She was also member of Heroes for Hire and Stark International.”
During the Marvel Panel in Hall H at 2019 San Diego Comic Con, Angelina Jolie spoke to the audience about her excitement to portray Thena. “I’m so excited to be here,” Jolie said, “I’m going to work 10 times harder because I think what it means to be a part of the MCU, what it means to be an Eternal, to be a part of this family, I know what we all need to do. We have all read the script. We have all know what the task ahead is and we are all going to be working very, very hard. I’m training. I am thrilled. Thank you so much.”
According to a synopsis of the relatively unknown comic series in Production Weekly, “The story of The Eternals is set millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered individuals as well as more villainous off-shoots known as the Deviants. The two groups went on to battle each other throughout history to see which would eventually become the ultimate race. The story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes in moving amongst humans.”

Photos from the set show Jolie reviewing footage and going over the scene with crew members for the film. A large bonfire was also constructed off camera to help create a smokey effect on the water for the scene.
During the 2019 D23 Expo, Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige spoke of next year’s “Eternals,” inviting cast members from the much-anticipated film to the stage: Richard Madden, who portrays the all-powerful Ikaris; Kumail Nanjiani, who plays cosmic-powered Kingo; Lauren Ridloff, who portrays the super-fast Makkari, the first deaf hero in the MCU; Brian Tyree Henry, who plays the intelligent inventor Phastos; Salma Hayek, who plays the wise and spiritual leader Ajak; Lia McHugh, who portrays the eternally young, old-soul Sprite; Don Lee, who plays the powerful Gilgamesh; and Angelina Jolie, who stars as the fierce warrior Thena. Feige revealed concept art images of each character, and announced three new cast members and their characters: Gemma Chan, who plays humankind-loving Sersi; Kit Harington, who was cast as non-Eternal Dane Whitman, and Barry Keoghan, who portrays aloof loner Druig, and was on hand for the event. Directed by Chloé Zhao, who helmed the critically acclaimed Sundance film “The Rider,” “The Eternals” opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 6, 2020.
“Well, one of the cool things about that property and what Jack Kirby did with it and what’s been done with it in recent years is it does tie into they’re called Eternals, they’ve been around for a long time. You know?” Feige said. “There’s this notion of all of these myths and legends that we know from ancient times, were they inspired by the Eternals? Were they Eternals? It’s a very … you know, it’s an ancient aliens kind of sci-fi trope that we think would be fun to explore someday.”
