Disney Experiences sent shockwaves through the theme park community during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, giving eager fans their first look at a detailed physical model and concept art for an all-new Avatar-themed destination headed to Disney California Adventure.

Inspiration: Trading the Forest for the Seas

Unlike its East Coast counterpart, this new destination draws heavily from Avatar: The Way of Water and subsequent film sequels.

The land shifts focus away from the floating mountains of the Valley of Mo’ara and dives headfirst into Pandora’s vast, open oceans, coastal biomes, and stunning marine life. Models revealed at D23 showcase:

• Towering coastal rockwork with curved, wave-like formations acting as the land’s dramatic centerpiece.
• Lush marine bioluminescence integrated into the flora, creating a mesmerizing glow intended to bring the land to life after dark.
• Cascading waterfalls seamlessly blending dense, exotic alien forests with sprawling aquatic environments.

Attractions: A Dynamic Oceanic Boat Ride

At the heart of the new land will be a flagship dynamic boat ride.

Designed as a sweeping, emotional, and intense adventure, the attraction will take guests on an excursion through Pandora’s waterways. Riders will sail past tranquil coastal scenes before navigating through dense alien forests, encountering majestic sea creatures, and facing the unpredictable dangers of the wild Pandoran open seas.

Location: Bidding Farewell to Monstropolis

To bring Pandora’s oceans to Anaheim, Imagineers will be redeveloping a major portion of the park’s Hollywood Backlot area.

The new land will take over the footprint currently occupied by Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!. While it marks the end of an era for the classic Pixar dark ride, the massive real estate provides the footprint necessary to build an expansive, deeply immersive alien world.

Timeline & What’s Next

As with any project of this scale, site preparation and construction logistics have evolved.

Current Status: While initial plans aimed for a quicker transition, operational adjustments pushed the permanent closure of Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! to early 2027 to accommodate park attendance and concurrent resort developments.

Despite site preparation shifts, Disney maintains that behind-the-scenes work on the Avatar experience is moving forward. Theme park fans will be keeping a close eye on official announcements as Walt Disney Imagineering finalizes construction timelines and reveals an official opening window.
