Finding Romance at Disney!

Finding Romance at Disney!

To me, Walt Disney World is all about love — love for fun and for happy times with family in a magical place. It is the love in my heart for Walt Disney and the person he was, and the love for my family and having this time together It is the love I see in the eyes of a child when he runs to Mickey, the love in a father’s words when he tells his daughter she is a princess, and in a teen’s laughter when he is going 0-60 in 2.8 seconds.

Love is in the air at Walt Disney World. But did you know there is also romance at Walt Disney World? It is a perfect place to get married, spend your honeymoon, or spend Valentine’s Day with your honey. Actually, did you notice that vacation start dates of February 11-16, 2012 are included in Disney’s new free dining offer? Wouldn’t you love to take your sweetie to WDW for a magical cupid vacation? Well, if you are thinking about it (like I am) here is some information that could help you plan a romantic getaway for you and your special someone.

How can you find romance at Walt Disney World?
The easiest answer I can give you is that you find romance at WDW the same way you find it at home. According to Gary Chapman, you just have to follow one of “The Five Love Languages.” Every person responds to one or more of these five love languages: Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Physical Touch, Acts of Service, or Words of Affirmation. Whatever your sweetie’s love language is, speak it during your trip. Hopefully, you will receive the same in return. It is easy to incorporate each of these languages into a Walt Disney World trip. Here are some ideas:

Quality Time: nothing says, “I love you,” like full, undivided attention for someone whose love language is quality time. Speaking this language requires turning the TV off, putting the iPhone down, letting go of the work to be done, and spending real time with your sweetheart. If you are off on a Disney getaway as a Valentine gift for your honey, then you have already figured this out. Spend your time together, don’t plan any activities apart. Go out to dinner (for FREE) and talk and laugh like you used to.

Receiving Gifts: for a person with this love language, it is often not the cost of a gift that says “I love you” but the thought involved in choosing the gift. The thoughtfulness and effort is what speaks this language. If one of you responds to receiving gifts, plan to do some shopping during the trip. Surprise each other with a meaningful gift that will be cherished for years to come!

Physical Touch: this language is for people who like holding hands, hugging, etc. If this is your love language, it won’t even matter where you are, just make sure to hold hands and make eye contact during your time in the parks and during activities. Hugs speak volumes! Since this is a Disney blog I won’t go further than that but you can use your imagination when alone for Valentine’s Day in a beautiful resort I am sure.

Acts of Service: any act done to ease the burden of responsibility weighing on your sweetie will speak volumes. At home this might be doing the dishes, making dinner sometimes; but YAY you will be on vacation so there will be no need for that, especially since someone else will be making your meals and washing your dishes. Things you can do at Walt Disney World requires a bit more thought so here are a couple of ideas: go fill the refillable mugs with coffee in the morning while your sweetie sleeps in a bit, or give a massage or foot rub at the end of the day.

Words of Affirmation (Encouragement): it is not necessarily true that actions speak louder than words. In fact, for a person with this love language compliments mean more than actions.  Hearing the words, “I love you” can make their day, while insults can shatter their spirit. This is very important on a vacation when you are running here and there. Just be courteous and give compliments each day about each other. Don’t be critical or get onto each other for anything that goes wrong. Just focus on and enjoy the positives during the trip.

Other than specific ways you can speak your love languages, here are some general ideas for romance at Disney:

Take a walk!
You can ride the monorail to the Polynesian Resort and walk along the beach to the Grand Floridian Resort. Once you get there, you can have a drink at the outside bar or just sit and relax and enjoy time together.

Take a boat!
A boat outing is another way to get away from it all. You can take a ride on Bay Lake, or take the ferry from MK to the Transportation and Ticket Center and then to a monorail to the Contemporary and lay out in a hammock on the beach and watch the Electrical Water Pageant. Alternatively, you can take the boat that visits the Magic Kingdom, Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge and Ft. Wilderness, or the boat that visits the Polynesian, Grand Floridian and Magic Kingdom. Or you can cruise the loop around Crescent Lake, which visits Epcot, Boardwalk, Yacht/Beach Club, Swan/Dolphin, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios without going into the parks.

Take the monorail!
You can ride the monorail that circles the three Monorail resorts (Contemporary, Polynesian and Grand Floridian). You can get off and explore each resort, or just enjoy the ride and the view.

Take a dip!
Going for a late night dip in the hot tub at your resort is a romantic thing to do…when all is quiet and the moon is out.

Visit the BoardWalk
The Disney Boardwalk is a fun place to walk around and enjoy the atmosphere! There are some free and inexpensive things you can do at Disney’s BoardWalk, such as watching the street performers (jugglers, comedians, fire-eaters, jazz ensembles, etc.). You can also play carnival games at a small cost and win your honey a prize. Just walking around hand-in-hand can be very romantic.

Head Downtown
If you like shopping or just like being in a really cool and happening place, head to Downtown Disney.

There are quite a few romantic spots in Walt Disney World. Here are some tips for the parks:

Magic Kingdom: You can stay on Main Street at night, when everyone else has left and enjoy some quality time in front of the castle.

Epcot: Epcot has several romantic hideaways. In France, you can head down towards the Eiffel Tower, turn right and pass through the cosmetic and perfume shops, and you will come out into a private little garden with benches all around.

In Canada there is another lovely alcove. It is not so quiet, but the noise you hear isn’t from talking, but from the majestic falls. Many people don’t bother to go to the very top of the Canada Pavilion to see the falls, but there are several quiet spots tucked away in this area. Visit in the evening if you want to spend some time alone.

The United Kingdom is home to an enchanting tea garden designed with comfort in mind. Take a stroll and enjoy the flowers, or simply relax on one of the benches and savor a private moment.

World Showcase AFTER Illuminations is our favorite time there. If you find a bench as the multitude pours out of the park and just wait awhile, it gets empty. It’s so pretty and peaceful with the music playing and all the lights. It really makes for a nice stroll back to the front of the park.

These are just a few ideas for finding (and making) romance at Walt Disney World. There is no better place to “make magic” than the most magical place on earth.
