The Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones has been cast in director Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Star Wars spin-off movie.
The film is set to open nationwide in December of 2016 and the plot details of the “Star Wars” spinoff are still unknown. Edwards’ standalone movie is one of two known “Star Wars” spinoffs in the works at Lucasfilm and Disney. Director Josh Trank known for “Chronicle” is developing the other “Star Wars” spin off. No release date has been set for Trank’s film.
At this time it is unknown how the spin offs will play into the Star Wars universe or the seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise. The J.J. Abrams-directed “Force Awakens,” which opens this December will take place 30 years after 1983’s “Return of the Jedi,” while it is believed that the spin offs will primarily focus on origin stories from the early days of some of the original characters or possibly a new character that will be introduced in Episode VII. In May, 2014, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger said a total of three standalone films would be produced in the next decade.
