Disney Cruise Line will be once again be touring Europe this summer, starting in May. They will begin their itineraries in the Mediterranean, followed by cruises to northern Europe, Norway, and Iceland. My previous articles brought you glimpses of destinations in Italy and France. Today we’ll be exploring the cities of Spain, one of the more popular destinations for Disney Cruise Line.
VIGO
This European city is all at once progressive and traditional, melding modern fishing industry with vestiges of the region’s long cultural heritage. Away from the immediate vicinity of the dock, you’ll discover that Vigo’s streets are steeped in medieval charm. Encounter exquisite shops, ancient forts and palaces, and seafood at the pinnacle of freshness. True cuisine connoisseurs will not want to miss the Galician oysters!
In Vigo, you’ll find friendly locals whose backgrounds represent a mix of Roman, Celtic, French and Spanish influences. Those who wish to immerse themselves in local traditions and daily life can venture to Casco Vello, the oldest part of the city.
PALMA DE MALLORCA
Bringing together the relaxed atmosphere of the Mediterranean with the cultural and economic appeal of a thriving city, Palma is a destination that holds magic for all who visit. You can be sure to find a vast array of museums, cafés, nightclubs and shops within the ancient city walls.
What makes Palma stand out from other cities is its sheer beauty. The city is so rich in Roman and Arab history; you’ll feel transported to another place and era where the remnants of the past blend seamlessly with contemporary Spanish living.
MÁLAGA
For a glimpse into the culture of Málaga, saunter through Mercado Central where locals shop daily for fresh fish and produce. Or, visit Alameda Principal, a seaside park that’s favored for its lush gardens.
When you’re ready to refuel after a long day of exploration, satisfy your appetite with classic Spanish tapas dishes that showcase the best ingredients of the Mediterranean region including seafood, olives and cheese. Seek out local specialties like paella, gazpacho and sangria.
IBIZA
This vivacious seaside retreat buzzes with historical sites, shopping, restaurants and a beautiful harbor. With turquoise waters, white-sand stretches, mysterious caves and scintillating nightlife—it’s no small wonder why Ibiza attracts throngs of celebrities and glamor-seekers alike. It’s rumored to be the spot where sirens lured Ulysses from his ship in The Odyssey! The cosmopolitan allure of this tourist-friendly town also draws from its free-thinking, hospitable atmosphere.
CADIZ
Cádiz has 4 distinct districts: City Centre, La Vina, El Populo and Santa Maria. The city core features colorful plazas, gardens and historic Moorish and Baroque cathedrals. La Vina is the nightlife district, home to Cádiz’s many bars and clubs. El Populo is the tourist district full of monuments, shops and cafes. Santa Maria—flamenco capital of the world—is the oldest district, boasting some of the city’s most impressive architecture.
Food plays an important role in Cádiz and the abundance of seafood is amazing. Because the city is surrounded on 3 sides by water, its culinary life benefits immeasurably. Dine on ocean delicacies—from squid, shrimp and lobster to such local dishes as “caldillo de peros” (fish stewed in orange sauce) and “pescadito fritas” (fries Cádiz-style). For a sweet treat, try “pain de Cádiz” (marzipan stuffed with fruits) and “turron” (Spanish nougat).
Cádiz is also one of the world’s major sherry and brandy producers. While in port, pick up some Amontillado sherry, a bottle of which has a place on every Cádiz dinner table.
BARCELONA
Among its many qualities, Barcelona has incredible culinary delights, leading fashion designers, numerous museums and art galleries, expansive parks and beaches, a convenient subway system and last, but not least, amazing architecture—from Medieval to Modernism.
