Disney/Pixar just launched the brand new virtual world World of Cars Online yesterday, August 11, at the launch event at Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank, CA. I was lucky enough to be there.
I’ve already written a post about the event, but now it’s time to focus on World of Cars itself
I’m 18-years-old, a bit out of the age range that World of Cars is aiming at, but I can say that I am having a blast playing with it. It’s also great that there are 40 different servers to play on. Does the server you’re playing on have too much traffic? Go ahead and switch over to another one, such as Hatchback, Biofuel, Shocks, Nozzle, Chrome, and the many others to choose from.
To start off, a new user must create his or her very own car. This was fun for me because you’re able to customize everything, from the numbers on your side panels all the way to your car’s name. There are so many different names to choose from, the combinations are endless! My little purple car is named Mia Brightcap.
Once your car is finished and your account is set up, you’re off to explore the regions of Carburetor County — Downtown Radiator Springs, Fillmore’s Fields, Willy’s Butte and Redhood Valley.
In the virtual world, you can interact with the characters from the film, such as Lightning McQueen and Mater. They’ll give you quests to fulfill and in exchange you’ll receive money, which can be used to purchase upgrades and modifications for your car. You also have your own yard to decorate so your friends can see.
There are also fun activities and games to play. All regions offer a racetrack to race other players. In Fillmore’s Fields, you can help him make his organic fuels at Fillmore’s Fuel Mixin’ Area, Man. You can also do what Mater loves most, tractor tipping.
In Downtown Radiator Springs, you can blast away enemies in Lightning Storm Space Assault (top), or help Ramone paint cars in Ramone’s Paint Blaster (my personal favorite game).
Players also have the ability to establish their own racing career, trying their hardest to make it all the way to the Piston Cup!
There is also a section for parents where they can learn more about the game as well as set their child’s community settings.
World of Cars Online offers a free to play option, as well as additional features which can be accessed by “sponsored” players, or users with a paid subscription. The subscription costs $5.95 per month. Get out there and start racing!
