Walt Disney Company’s ESPN sports television division has laid off several hundred workers. These job losses come as part of a company-wide drive to improve profitability. However, ESPN eliminated less than 400 jobs amid the company cuts.
One report stated that the firings numbered fewer than 400 and even included unfilled positions. ESPN, which is based in Bristol, Connecticut, announced the cuts to employees in an e-mailed statement.
“We are implementing changes across the company to enhance our continued growth while smartly managing costs,” ESPN said in the statement. “While difficult, we are confident that it will make us more competitive, innovative and productive.”
These cutbacks total less than 6 percent of the company’s 7,000 employees worldwide. The Walt Disney Company has made “an ongoing review of costs a crucial part of its strategy, along with growth at its parks, media networks and consumer products unit, to increase profit margins,” according to Bloomberg.
The Walt Disney company also eliminated 150 jobs from its film studio in April and shut down LucasArts, a video-game development, in an effort to cut costs this year.
