Orlando locals are puzzled as Disney’s Contemporary Resort is named the ugliest building in Florida

In a recent ranking by Alot Travel, Disney’s Contemporary Resort was controversially labeled as the “ugliest building” in Florida. This ranking is a bit of a headscratcher for Orlando locals, who likely would point to the Eye Sore in I4 as the winner for this category.

The article refers to The Contemporary as “a futuristic Aztec pyramid, which is not something you would normally associate with Mickey Mouse.” The building was, in fact, constructed with a futuristic look and feel in mind, utilizing technology that was advanced for the time (including prefabricated modular rooms). The vision toward the future that exists in both Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT ties directly into the vision for the Contemporary Resort.

The author also criticizes the Contemporary for being ‘loud’ due to the Monorail running through the A-Frame tower, which is ironic considering that close proximity to the monorail is one of the key selling points for guests looking to stay at The Contemporary. The ability to hop right on the Monorail from the resort makes The Contemporary an ideal location for families with young children, as it minimizes walking at the beginning and end of a long park day.

Beyond its exterior, stepping inside the Contemporary Resort reveals an interior that exudes elegance and modernity. The prefabricated modular rooms, which were groundbreaking at the time of the resort’s construction, showcase Disney’s commitment to innovation and forward-thinking design. The resort’s commitment to embracing the future aligns perfectly with Disney’s ethos of continuous progress and improvement.

A highlight of the interior is the awe-inspiring 90-foot-tall mural by Disney Legend Mary Blair. This captivating masterpiece celebrates the Grand Canyon and the American Southwest, infusing the resort with Disney’s signature charm and storytelling. It creates an atmosphere of wonder and adds to the resort’s allure, enhancing the overall guest experience.

Disney's Contemporary Resort Named Ugliest Building in Florida

The designation of Disney’s Contemporary Resort as the “ugliest building” in Florida undermines the true essence of this unique and captivating structure. Disney World has always been a pioneer in creating immersive and imaginative experiences, and the Contemporary Resort is no exception. Its unconventional design challenges the norm, giving visitors an opportunity to encounter a one-of-a-kind architectural marvel that embodies the spirit of Disney’s innovative storytelling.
