Disneynature Penguins

With the celebration of the release of Disneynature’s Penguins movie, the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival debuted a new penguin sculpture this week.  Guests will notice right away that this creation is not made of floral components, but constructed of plastic debris.

The sculpture can be found between The Land and The Seas pavilions at Epcot.  The creation depicts an adult Adélie penguin resting with its chick in a “pebble” nest.  Made entirely of marine debris such as toothbrushes, bottle caps, toys, and other plastics, all the materials were recovered from oceans and waterways.

Disneynature Penguins

Created by the non-profit WashedAshore.org, their mission is to create works of art that inspire people to keep oceans and waterways free of plastic pollution.  You can make a significant impact by pledging to reduce the amount of single-use plastics you use each day. Opting instead for reusable, recyclable and sustainable materials.

A second sculpture appears over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park to celebrate Earth Month, from April 1-30th.  Ed Helms, the narrator of Penguins, explains the initiative and how the sculptures were created with the help of volunteers.

Disneynature’s Penguins follows the story of Steve, the Adélie penguin, who joins millions of male penguins on the quest to find the perfect nest and life partner to start a family.  Steve and his friends face hardship and obstacles along the way in this coming-of-age story.  Penguins opens in theatres everywhere on April 17th, just in time for Earth Day.

If you purchase a ticket to Penguins opening week, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Wildlife Conservation Network through the Disney Conservation Fund.  Since 2000, the Disney Conservation Fund has donated $1 million to support penguin conservation around the world.
