Disneyland Unveils Extensive 30-Year Plan for Theme Park Expansion

Disneyland will be sharing its 30-year plan for theme park expansion with the Anaheim Planning Commission and City Council soon! Yesterday, Disney unveiled its plans to Orange County business leaders. The Anaheim theme park resort district is going to be extensively reimagined over the next 3 decades.

Ken Potrock, Disneyland Resort President, spoke about the DisneylandForward proposal to the OC Forum at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel. The proposal envisions extensive theme park, retail and parking expansion within the resort district boundaries.

“To put it simply, DisneylandForward sets the stage for significant and multi-decade investment in the future. This is the next generation of the Disneyland resort,” Potrock told the attendees. “When Disney invests, all boats rise and everyone benefits.”

This DisneylandForward plan was first announced in September 2021. The presentation yesterday allowed Disney to put forward its plans detailing the tourism, tax revenue and employment benefits of the DisneylandForward proposal.

“The economic engine that is the Disneyland resort will be turning 68 years young in July, yet we believe it has more potential than ever,” Potrock said. “When we work together the possibilities are endless and that is exactly what we are trying to do.”

Any time Disneyland expands or puts forward large projects like this, the whole area benefits. According to an economic study, during an average four-year construction period, Disneyland would generate 4,500 jobs, $11 million in tax revenue and $1.1 billion in economic output in Anaheim for every billion dollars spent.

The presentation also included concept art from Disney theme park projects around the globe offering “possibilities” of what future expansion could look like at the Disneyland resort. The Tangled, Frozen and Peter Pan themed lands coming to Tokyo Disneyland in Japan and the Zootopia themed land planned for Shanghai Disneyland in China were included.

“What we would love is for those future innovations to have a spot here in Anaheim,” Disney’s Global Development vice president Rachel Alde said during a panel discussion.

As part of the proposal, Disney hopes to bring theme park attractions to the Downtown Disney and Lilo and Stitch parking lots woven amid the Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier Hotel. On the other side of the resort, they’d like to bring together theme park experiences, hotels, retail, dining and entertainment on the Toy Story parking lot next to the Anaheim Convention Center. The plan stays within Disneyland’s existing 500-acre property with no physical expansion or additional acreage.

The DisneylandForward proposal will go before the Anaheim Planning Commission before the end of the year and then the Anaheim City Council in early 2024.

Current Disneyland Expansion

Disneyland is currently working on reimagining the Downtown Disney District of the resort. Buildings have been demolished and construction is ongoing. The west-end area will be a beautiful blend of vibrant color palettes, design elements and patterns influenced by the region, and will include an open lawn for relaxation and future events, and an even broader and diverse collection of dining and shopping.

The world-renowned restaurant Din Tai Fung will be coming to the district. Michelin-starred Chef Carlos Gaytan will bring his inclusive vision of Mexican cuisine to Paseo and Centrico. Fan-favorite Porto’s Bakery will also be joining the lineup of dining options at Downtown Disney. Earl of Sandwich has already returned as well!

What are you hoping to see come to Downtown Disney?
