Disneyland lays off 1800 Security Guards, Ride Operators, Characters and more

Disney recently announced 28,000 employees will be laid off. The Orange County Register is reporting that over 1,800 of those layoffs will come from the Disneyland Resort. Included in the layoffs are security guards, ride operators, characters, and more.

Josh D’Amaro announced the layoffs last week in a letter to cast members.

“We initially hoped that this situation would be short-lived and that we would recover quickly and return to normal,” D’Amaro said in a letter to employees. “Seven months later, we find that has not been the case. And, as a result, today we are now forced to reduce the size of our team across executive, salaried and hourly roles.”

Teamsters Local 495, a local union, announced that Disneyland will lay off 1,400 of its cast members, according to the union’s website. Teamsters Local 495’s cast members include attractions operators, parking attendants, ranch hands, bus drivers and warehouse employees.

Another local union, Independent Employee Service Association, announced that Disneyland will lay off 478 security guards who work at the Disneyland Resort.

Other local unions announced recently that 2,858 Disneyland restaurant workers and around 950 hotel workers will be laid off.

According to the unions, the layoffs will take effect on November 1 with health benefits continuing through the end of the year. Also according to the unions, Disneyland employees recalled within a year will get to keep their seniority.

There’s no set number of layoffs at the Disneyland Resort yet, but an early estimate puts the number over 8,400 employees.
