This visual masterpiece transports you directly to the construction site, capturing the high-stakes, frantic energy of the final year leading up to Disneyland’s historic July 1955 opening day.

Covering the intense construction sprint from 1954 through the 1955 debut, Disneyland Handcrafted delivers a lean, 75-minute journey into the park’s origins. In a bold stylistic choice, the film relies entirely on archival footage and period soundbites—meaning no modern “talking heads” or interviews to break the immersion.

Instead, you get a raw, fly-on-the-wall perspective through unpolished clips that have sat untouched in Disney’s vaults for over 70 years. The restoration is a visual triumph; the grainy, faded reels fans are used to have been replaced with high-resolution color. Every moment was a race against the clock. As teams pioneered brand-new technology, construction crews worked 24/7 to bring the physical park to life before the gates opened to the world.

The documentary’s existence is a feat of archival detective work. Iwerks and her team spent years combing through raw 16mm outtakes from the original Disneyland television series. Because these reels were mostly unpolished “scraps” without timecodes or slates, the team had to scan every frame and piece the story together like a giant puzzle. To ensure historical accuracy, they collaborated with Disney legends Tony Baxter and Don Hahn to provide essential context to the “lost” scenes.

For Director Leslie Iwerks, this project is personal. Her roots go to the very beginning of the company:
