Academy Award-nominated director Leslie Iwerks has unearthed long-forgotten reels from the deep Disney archives, meticulously restoring them in stunning, high-resolution color. This visual masterpiece transports you directly to the construction site, capturing the high-stakes, frantic energy of the final year leading up to Disneyland’s historic July 1955 opening day.

Covering the intense construction sprint from 1954 through the 1955 debut, Disneyland Handcrafted delivers a lean, 75-minute journey into the park’s origins. In a bold stylistic choice, the film relies entirely on archival footage and period soundbites—meaning no modern “talking heads” or interviews to break the immersion.

Instead, you get a raw, fly-on-the-wall perspective through unpolished clips that have sat untouched in Disney’s vaults for over 70 years. The restoration is a visual triumph; the grainy, faded reels fans are used to have been replaced with high-resolution color. You’ll see crews hand-sculpting Main Street’s brickwork, balancing on Tomorrowland’s steel beams, and navigating the Mark Twain across the water just days before the world arrived.

The documentary vividly illustrates the massive gamble Walt Disney took, racing to transform 160 acres of Anaheim orange groves into a fully functional theme park in just 365 days. By contrasting Walt’s polished television promos with the chaotic, high-pressure reality of the construction site, the film exposes the mounting obstacles and delays that nearly derailed the dream.

Director Leslie Iwerks described the project during a preview Q&A as “probably the most dangerous decision Walt Disney ever made,” showing just how close the entire company came to the brink while chasing an immovable deadline.

Innovation, however, thrived amidst the chaos. The film reveals the origin of Circle-Vision 360, a breakthrough born from a chance hallway conversation. Walt tasked Ub Iwerks with creating a circular cinematic experience, leading Ub to engineer a rig of nine 16mm cameras that would debut in Tomorrowland on opening day.

Every moment was a race against the clock. As teams pioneered brand-new technology, construction crews worked 24/7 to bring the physical park to life before the gates opened to the world.

Original

The documentary’s existence is a feat of archival detective work. Iwerks and her team spent years combing through raw 16mm outtakes from the original Disneyland television series. Because these reels were mostly unpolished “scraps” without timecodes or slates, the team had to scan every frame and piece the story together like a giant puzzle. To ensure historical accuracy, they collaborated with Disney legends Tony Baxter and Don Hahn to provide essential context to the “lost” scenes.

A Family Legacy Behind the Lens

For Director Leslie Iwerks, this project is personal. Her roots go to the very beginning of the company:

  • The Grandfather: Ub Iwerks, the legendary animator who co-created Mickey Mouse.
  • The Father: Don Iwerks, a master camera technician who helped build the very 360-degree camera systems featured in the film.

Building on the success of her acclaimed works, The Pixar Story and The Imagineering Story, Leslie Iwerks continues to be the definitive voice in documenting Disney’s rich history.

For theme park historians and casual fans alike, this is essential viewing. The stunningly restored footage offers the most intimate look ever captured of Disneyland’s construction, moving past the polished PR to show the raw grit behind the magic.

The film is a tribute to the immense pressure and unparalleled craftsmanship required to build the original park. It shines a light on the sheer dedication of the workers who labored around the clock to translate Walt’s impossible vision into a physical reality.

Disneyland Handcrafted is available to stream now on Disney+ and is also available for free on YouTube.
