Walt Disney Animation hosted a press event for their upcoming new film, “Zootopia” coming to theaters in March 4, 2016.

The events of the day included the opportunity to see a short clip from the film.   The scene at the DMV with Flash is one of the funniest moments and my absolute favorite.   I loved the concept of a small, female trying to prove herself in a profession dominated by big, tough (male) animals.

After the film preview we had the opportunity to meet with several of the incredibly talented folks that create the magic.

The Character Design Team gave us look at how the characters were designed. Each area of Zootopia had a group of animals that were specific to that region which meant that all shapes, sizes and species had to be studied and adapted to the specific needs of the film.

The Production Design Team talked about the different regions and what it took to be able to create each area to not only fit the specific animals but also incorporate all the details from the ground to buildings to the climate.  The Sahara Square had to look the part, Tundra Town needed to fit the needs of the animals while the Bunny Burroughs and the Rain Forest areas required a unique look to enable Zootopia to provide the complete look and feel of each neighborhood and each species on film.

Animation Team had the difficult job of combining animal and human behaviors to form the characters needed to make the film believable, including speaking, walking and other details, all while staying true to the animal characteristics.
