If you’re like most people, getting to Disney World can be a little exhausting regardless of how you get there, but it’s hard not to want to go out and do everything the moment you arrive on property. If you get there early enough (or if you have an annual pass), you’re probably going straight to the parks. This is usually what I do, with great plans to finish up the night in whatever park is having Extra Magic Hours that night, only to find myself back at the resort and asleep by 9:00 p.m. That early morning flight, even though it’s only 75 minutes long, the ride on Magic Express, and the excitement that usually means I don’t sleep that much the night before, gets me every time. Still, if I get there early enough, I’m going to the park that first day!
Having said that, I do think there are some things you should absolutely avoid on your travel day.
1. Any major kid activity like Bibbity Bobbity Boutique or Pirate’s League. If you’re doing BBB, you’re probably spending around $100 for the experience. You’ll want your child awake and happy, not sleepy and cranky.
2. Big dinners out. Unless you can only get that elusive Le Cellier reservation for that night, save it for another day.
3. Implementing your actual touring plan. If you have a strict touring plan, save it for day 2. It’s fine going to the park on the same day that you travel, but take it easy. This is especially true if you have young kids who aren’t experienced park-goers. They may need some time to adjust to their new surroundings.
Next up, I’ll talk about what to do if you’re not going to park on your first day.

We just returned from Walt Disney World. I think if I would have read anything cautionary about what we did on our first day PRIOR to our visit, I would not have believed it. We had a lack of sleep and were a bit punchy so if you need to rest, get settled in, enjoy the place that you’re staying at and rest up for going out the next day!
