Disney World labor contract negotiations stall

With a contract set to expire on December 11 for 27,000 service workers at Walt Disney World, neither side proposed any plan on Friday to move forward after mediation broke down last week.

Commenting on Disney’s original offer, Steve Eisenhardt, vice president of Disney Parks and Resorts labor relations, said in a statement: “This is a good deal for our cast members who are clearly being misled by some union leaders.”

Eisenhardt was referring in part to a documentary published on YouTube by the union in which Disney employees paint a bleak picture of wages and benefits at the theme parks. The union released the documentary in its entirety after mediation broke down.

“The site on YouTube that is showing the film has had over 20,000 views in the last few days. I never expected that many,” said Eric Clinton, president of one of the unions under the Service Trades Council which is negotiating the contract with Disney.

Clinton says the company is raising the cost of health insurance to employees by more than the proposed pay raise, meaning most employees will experience a net drop in pay. Disney, however, contends Clinton is using an example applicable to few employees, and most will bring home more money under the company’s offer.

The company and union have been in negotiations since September for a new 42-month contact. The current contract expired October 2 but has been extended. Covered employees include bus drivers, waiters, custodians, parking attendants and front desk staff.
