Big changes are on the horizon at Walt Disney World as the first permits for the highly anticipated Villains Land expansion at Magic Kingdom have been filed. This expansion is part of a larger project that will also bring two Cars-themed attractions to replace Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America, transforming Frontierland in the process.

The permits filed this week primarily focus on water management and the establishment of construction laydown yards, crucial first steps in what will be a multi-year expansion. The project will require extensive site preparation, particularly in the low-lying areas to the north and west of the Rivers of America, where water management will be a key concern.
Disney has designated three construction laydown yards for this project. Two of these yards will be located west of the guest areas in Magic Kingdom, ensuring minimal disruption to parkgoers. However, one laydown yard will be situated along the northwestern banks of the Rivers of America, meaning that some construction activity will be visible to guests as the expansion progresses.

While the permits filed this week are focused on preparatory work, Disney has indicated that construction will ramp up significantly in 2025. This marks the beginning of an ambitious transformation of Frontierland and the creation of Villains Land, which is expected to be situated further north of the new Cars-themed area likely North of the current park boarders at Big Thunder Mountain.
