Nancy Copley, a Walt Disney World cast member for 19 years, is claiming that Disney forced her out of her job due to her request that an air freshener be removed from the bathroom that she used. Copley a long time sufferer of asthma stated that the chemicals used in the freshener was triggering her condition.
Copley had recently been featured in a WFTV9 story on chemical sensitivity in the workplace. It was about this time that she made the request to Disney to remove the air freshener.
The month after the story aired she was told by Disney to leave her job and receive a settlement with the park or get nothing. Copley was only one year away from retirement.
Copley said because her restriction to the fragrance was considered “personal,” the park did not have to comply and asked her to leave.
“They said it would cost them too much money to take an air freshener out of a bathroom,” Copley said. “It was either do the settlement or lose my job and not get anything.”
While the Americans Disabilities Act covers chemical sensitivity, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) currently has no national indoor air quality standard.
Disney did not respond when WFTV9 asked for a comment.
