Walt Disney Imagineering Debuts Next-Generation Robotic Character, Olaf Coming to Disneyland Parks

A groundbreaking moment in Disney Parks history took place today at Disneyland Paris, offering a glimpse into the future of character experiences. Bruce Vaughn, President and Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Imagineering, joined Natacha Rafalski, Présidente of Disneyland Paris, to introduce a brand-new, next-generation robotic character: Olaf, the beloved snowman from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen.

This debut marks a significant new chapter in Disney character innovation. It represents a leap forward where cutting-edge technology, storytelling, and collaboration converge to bring the screen to reality in ways never seen before.

Bringing Animation to Life From his distinctive waddle to his wide-eyed expressions, every gesture and detail of this new figure has been crafted to reflect the Olaf audiences know and love from the films. Imagineers focused on making him appear truly “alive” and curious.

One of the most impressive details lies in his texture. To recreate the magical, snow-like shimmer that Olaf has in the movies, the team utilized special iridescent fibers. These fibers catch the light exactly like fresh snow, making him one of the most expressive and true-to-life characters ever built by Imagineering.

A Collaboration of Art and Tech This innovation is deeply rooted in Disney’s legacy. Just as Walt Disney pioneered early hand-drawn films, today’s Imagineers are working hand-in-hand with the modern masters of animation.

To create this next-gen Olaf, Walt Disney Imagineering collaborated closely with the film’s original animators at Walt Disney Animation Studios. The goal was to ensure that every movement felt authentic to the character. As the team noted, this project wasn’t just about replicating the animation; it was about emulating the creators’ original intent, ensuring that the Olaf guests meet in the real world is the exact same personality they fell in love with on screen.

Coming Soon to Disney Parks. While unveiled at Disneyland Paris, this isn’t just a tech demo. Disney has confirmed that this next-generation Olaf will be making his debut at Disney parks soon, promising to bring a new level of immersion to Frozen-themed lands and experiences around the world.
