Walt Disney Co. is suing Dish Network for copyright violations and Starz Entertainment is also suing Dish for breach of contract.
Disney argues that the agreement with Dish and Starz was to show movies to premium members only with Starz access like “Toy Story 3” and “Alice in Wonderland”. Dish has been providing free access to Starz until January 2012 in a recent promotion starting in February. Both Disney and Starz had written to ask Dish to stop their Starz promotion, but Dish refused.
“Dish Network pays hundreds of millions of dollars for the right to distribute Starz content to our customers, which includes the rights to a number of Disney movies,” the company said in a statement.
Most of the Starz movies are from Disney and Sony Pictures. Sony is not suing at this time.
