According to the Wall Street Journal, ABC is planning to screen the premiere episode of The River in theaters and on college campuses. The strategy, known as pre-sampling, is being used by several other TV networks to catch viewers attention. With more and more viewers turning to cable and Internet outlets, ABC hopes the move will get people to notice.
The River is a paranormal mystery that centers the disappearance of wildlife expert and TV personality Dr. Emmit Cole in the Amazon and the journey of his family, friends, and TV crew to find him. It was created and is produced by Orin Peli (Paranormal Activity) and Micheal R. Perry (The Practice, NYPD Blue) and looks both creepy and intriguing.
ABC hopes The River along with other new shows and current hit Once Upon a Time will increase ratings and appeal to the sought after 18-49 year old demographic.
The series will premier on ABC February 27, 2012.
