According to Comicbook.com, Disney+ is rumoured to potentially be merging with Hulu! Whilst the Walt Disney Company owns a significant amount of content across a number of brands and is looking to expand, and one way to make this possible is by merging Disney+ with Hulu across one platform! According to ComicBook.com since acquiring 20th Century Fox, Disney now owns new properties and platforms alongside Hulu and Disney+, therefore, it would make sense if all the brands were combined, but how could Disney make this happen?
Disney+ currently has around 73 million subscribers, whilst Hulu has approximately 36 million and if combined under one large platform that would mean 110 million subscribers, which in turn would add more weight to make important deals! The major kink in this plan is the strict delineation of content between both services. For instance, Disney+ is purely “family-friendly” even with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars Saga, featuring mild language or intense action. However, in stark contrast, Hulu streaming material contains R-rated and TV-MA content which could raise significant concerns with parents whose children access Disney+.
Whilst the best strategy for the company would be to merge the two brands under one streaming platform, The Walt Disney Company would need to think about the age restrictions could be managed. One way would be to look at the user profile screen as a gateway to selecting which streaming content they would like to access. Whilst Disney+ is rumoured to be merging with Hulu, we speculate the practicalities, particularly as Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox also include R-Rated brands and movie franchises such as Deadpool.
