Disney Reveals New ‘Once Upon A Studio’ Short at Annecy Film Festival

During the opening ceremony of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Disney revealed a new short film titled “Once Upon A Studio.” This nine-minute masterpiece commemorates Disney’s 100th anniversary and showcases a remarkable ensemble of over 400 Disney characters. The beloved Genie, voiced by the late Robin Williams, and Olaf, portrayed by Josh Gad, take center stage alongside iconic figures such as Tiana, Peter Pan, Moana, Maui, Merlin, Elsa, Goofy, Winnie The Pooh, and Flash the Sloth from Zootopia.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Gad took to Instagram to share his excitement about the short’s premiere at Annecy. He revealed, “Now that it’s premiered at Annecy, I’m so thrilled for the world to finally witness what @DisneyAnimation has created to honor the extraordinary 100-year legacy of the studio. I was almost moved to tears when I discovered that Olaf would appear alongside The Genie, incorporating previously unreleased audio of my idol #RobinWilliams.”

Additionally, the short film pays tribute to the late Burny Mattinson, a renowned animator who passed away earlier this year. Mattinson makes a cameo appearance, adding to the emotional depth and nostalgia of the production.

“Once Upon A Studio”  is directed by Dan Abraham and Trent Correy.  Eric Goldberg lead the hand-drawn animation for the short, while “Raya and the Last Dragon” supervising animator Andrew Feliciano oversaw the CG.

“This is a love letter to the medium, to Disney animation, and really a thank you to anyone in the audience that’s ever connected with a film over the last hundred years,” said director Dan Abraham.

“Once Upon A Studio” will be released, alongside an upcoming theatrical release, “Wish,” which arrives in theaters on November 22, 2023.
