Disney Quick Tip – Eat Breakfast in Your Room

Looking for a way to save money in your Disney vacation food budget?  One way our family saves money is to eat breakfast on our room.  Whether you are staying at a resort with a full kitchen or one with a small fridge and microwave, you can make a decent breakfast in your own room.  You can purchase some food items from your resort’s gift shop, with the biggest selection if you are staying at a deluxe resort or DVC villa.  You can have an even bigger selection by pre-ordering from a grocery delivery service like Garden Grocer or driving via rental car or taxi to the store yourself.  We have also been known to bring some breakfast items with us such as oatmeal packets, peanut butter and jelly packets, and coffee in our luggage when we fly.

What are some breakfast ideas you can make and eat in your room?  Besides making oatmeal, we have made scrambled eggs in coffee mugs and cooked bacon and sausage links in the microwave.  We have also purchased fruit, yogurt, pastries, English muffins, bread, cheese, and butter for breakfasts.  There are many possibilities to make a good breakfast right in your own room!  The resort prices for food from the gift shop are not as cheap as a grocery store, but they are cheaper that buying breakfast every day at the resort food court.

Now, I still need to have a Mickey waffle at least once during our stay whether it is from a Quick Service location or a character breakfast;  so eating breakfast in our room helps me save money to do just that!  If you are considering a Disney Dining Plan and are willing to make breakfast in your room, you could also get the Basic Dining Plan instead of the Deluxe Dining Plan to save money.

Does your family eat breakfast in your room while on vacation to save money?  What other ideas do you have for making breakfast in your room?  We would love to hear your thoughts!

  1. When we book our hotel in DL we always look for free breakfast. We also make sure our room has a fridge and microwave so we can make an easy dinner in the room if we need to. There is a Target just down the street in Anaheim, I have to yet to find the walmart.

  2. In April, we did 2 nights at Universal & a week at Disney. We brought cereal from home in disposable Glad Ware in our suitcases (enclose in a ziploc). The containers/room in luggage was great for bringing souvenirs home. It was definitely easier at Disney where we had a fridge & milk was sold in larger 1/2 gallon containers (Universal only had 1/2 pint cartons). We also brought granola bars, fruit leathers, tea bags, and water flavor packets from home. A couple days we did the granola bars/fruit leathers on the go & supplemented with a pastry or fruit. We also used the snack type foods to hold us over to a late brunch so we could take advantage of less crowded early mornings. In the past we’ve also bought Eggo Waffles & syrup at the DVC market & used the toaster to have breakfast.

  3. My kids prefer granola bars or cereal bars for breakfast anyway, so we packed those for breakfasts. We had a few QS credits we knew we wouldn’t use so my husband got breakfast a couple of mornings and brought it back to the room. We ended up sharing…you can’t bring bacon back and not have to share!

  4. We went to DL this past summer and our hotel room had a “full” kitchen in it – full size fridge, stove/oven, microwave, sink. We had breakfast in our room each day, except for our Princess breakfast, it was definitely a money saver. Since we drove down to DL, we had a vehicle to go to the local Walmart. We bought fruit like apples, grapes and bananas which were easy to pack in our small cooler. We also got the Mickey-shaped snack packs – about $2 each – that had apples slices, carrots or celery and cheese cubes, deli meat and buns/bread, juice boxes and some baby carrots and pre-packaged celery sticks. We made sandwiches and brought the fruit and veggies to munch on for lunch. Each supper was something cheap from a take out restaurant except for our first supper which we had at Goofy’s Kitchen. We saved about $300 in food, not bad for a 26 hour drive and 5 days at DL. 🙂
