Disney Pushing for 'Avengers: Endgame' to be Nominated for the Academy Awards

Disney Pushing for ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to be Nominated for the Academy Awards. We love this, 3000! Disney has created a placeholder page and announced their contenders for the 2020 Academy Awards and has asked The Academy to consider several titles for nomination, including: Aladdin (2019), The Lion King (2019), Toy Story 4, Frozen II, and Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame.

Though the page only consists of the contentors, Disney has yet to share which categories they hope to be considered for. Endgame Co-Director, Joe Russo, told Backstory Magazine recently awarded Disney Legend, Robert Downey Jr., gave “an awards-caliber performance” in one of his final performances as Tony Stark/Iron Man and has been campaigning with the likes of Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan/Iron Man Director) for RDJ to be considered for Best Actor at The Oscars.

“We don’t make movies for awards. Yes, making this was exceedingly difficult. We made the two most expensive movies ever back-to-back. But I just want to stump for one thing, and that’s Robert Downey,” Russo recently said to The Daily Beast. “I don’t know if I have ever seen — in movie history — a global audience react to a performance the way they did to Robert Downey in that movie. There were people bawling in movie theaters, hyperventilating. I mean, that is a profound performance, when you can touch audiences all over the world to that degree. We’ve never seen anything like that, and if that doesn’t deserve an Oscar, I don’t know what does.”

“I think he was able to discover and explore dimensions of the character over the course of many, many films, which is a bit of its own category. But I have to say that if you look at, especially how it began and how it ended in his performances between the first one and Endgame, there was a really thoughtful arc to the character, both in his performance and how all the filmmakers contributed to that character.”

During a conversation with Variety during a promotion for his new Netflix cooking show The Chef Show, Favreau stated “He has my vote for sure”, in reference to RDJ being considered for an Oscar.

“I’m glad I got to be a part of it and be there for those meaningful scenes as an actor, but also to be there as a friend, and to watch him explore things deeply through a character [when] you don’t normally have that opportunity,” said Favreau. “And he took full advantage of it.”

Robert has thoroughly enjoyed his time as Tony Stark and Iron Man, but knew that his time with Marvel had to eventually end. He discussed how him and co-star, Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), felt about stepping down to let the next group of heroes have their turn at the superhero biz.

“We had to get off. We opted to, and knew it was part of the job to get off the bus while it rolled on to other destinations,” Downey said in an August issue of Disney twenty-three magazine. “There’s something very sobering about it. I’m glad he and I will be there to welcome others as they retire their jerseys.”

There has been a ton of buzz surrounding Robert Downey Jr. as his co-stars and production teams push for him to be considered, and hopefully win, Best Actor at the 2020 Academy Awards, early next year. Seldom has there been such an active and passionate artist that works night and day for over a decade to give the best performance possible for their audience than Robert Downey Jr. We sincerely hope The Academy will consider RDJ for this high honor.

Robert was recently awarded with the Disney Legend Award for his time with Marvel Studios as Tony Stark and for the precedent he has set for those who follow in his footsteps.

Do you think Avengers: Endgame is worthy of Oscar buzz? Should Robert Downey Jr. win this award for  all the time, effort, and passion he has put into this role for over a decade? What other categories do you think Avengers: Endgame should qualify for? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
