New Disney Patent Could Power the Rally Race Attraction in Magic Kingdom’s Upcoming Cars Land

Disney Imagineering may have just dropped another clue about what guests can expect when Cars roll into Magic Kingdom. A newly published patent hints at a next-generation ride system that could bring the high-energy rally race attraction planned for Piston Peak National Park to life. The patent, published March 12, 2026, outlines a free-range vehicle platform designed to let ride vehicles roam across rugged terrain while still being carefully managed by a central control system. If the technology ends up in the park, it could make the upcoming Cars attraction feel less like a traditional track ride and more like a true off-road adventure.

The system described in the patent allows vehicles to travel along multiple paths through rough terrain filled with hills, bumps, rocks, puddles, and even shrubbery. Guests would have some control over their vehicle using a steering wheel or joystick, choosing different routes as they navigate the course. However, a central fleet controller keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes by preventing collisions, adjusting vehicle speeds based on terrain, and redirecting vehicles when needed. That means riders get the thrill of feeling like they are driving through a national park rally race while Disney’s technology quietly keeps the whole experience safe and perfectly timed.

Another interesting element in the patent is the ability for vehicles to shift laterally across the ride surface and follow multiple route options. Some paths could be easier scenic routes while others might include tighter turns, berms, or splashy obstacles. This could add major replay value since each ride might take a slightly different route through the course. That concept lines up closely with Disney’s previously announced description of the Piston Peak rally race, where guests race across wild terrain, climb mountain trails, dodge geysers, and blast through muddy puddles.

The proposed system also differs significantly from Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure. That attraction uses a slot-car style track where vehicles are locked into a fixed path for high-speed racing. The new patent instead focuses on terrain navigation and route choice, suggesting a more exploratory off-road adventure rather than a straight race. Vehicles are designed to handle elevation changes and rough ground while adjusting speed automatically depending on whether they are climbing a hill or descending a slope.

Interestingly, this patent was filed by the same two inventors behind another recent Disney patent describing an articulating arm ride system. Many fans believe those two systems could represent the two attractions Disney announced for Piston Peak National Park: the rally race thrill ride and a second family-friendly attraction. While patents do not guarantee exactly what will appear in the parks, the timing and details closely match what Disney has already teased for the Cars-themed expansion now under construction at Magic Kingdom.

Disney has not announced an opening timeline for Piston Peak National Park just yet, but construction began in early 2025 as the park prepares to transform the area formerly occupied by the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. If this patent ends up powering the rally race attraction, guests could soon be steering their way through a rugged Cars-inspired national park adventure that feels straight out of the world of Lightning McQueen and friends.
