Disney Patent Reveals Sneak Peek at New Moana Boat Ride Attraction

A new Disney patent reveals a look at a possible new Moana boat ride attraction. Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana is coming to Epcot next year but is an interactive walk-through experience. This new patent is a technology for a new kind of water ride that Disney could introduce in the near future.

Current water rides at Disney parks are tame compared to roller coasters and are designed to be relatively smooth. This new technology would create a more thrilling boat ride experience. Disney notes in the patent that current water rides “do not meet the demand for new and surprising ways to entertain visitors.”

The patent describes a cable system strategically attached to the sides of the boat that could simulate the movements of a boat bobbing in waves. Also described on the patent is an immersive projection dome around the boat and water. The patent explains that the boat “floats naturally in a volume of water,” and the technology will also be able to “display imagery and a soundtrack that are synchronized with the motions imparted upon the boat.”

Disney’s patent also suggests there could be more than one ride vehicle or multiple vehicles sharing the space, and guests will be able to decide which side to join. There could be two different experiences, including a “passive experience” and an “active experience.” Guests choosing the passive experience would watch the action whereas guests choosing the active experience would be part of the action.

This technology could be used on any number of attractions but the patent shows an image of Moana and Maui. At D23 Expo Disney announced the possibility of a Moana-themed area coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in the future. The official date of the patent is October 25, 2022.

What do you think of the possibility of a ride with this new technology?
