Disney May Buyout Sony to Gain Full Rights to ‘Spider-Man’ Characters. According to Giant Freakin Robot, Disney is reportedly thinking of acquiring Sony Pictures in order to gain the full rights to the characters from the Spider-Verse. Should Disney go through with the purchase, the entertainment conglomerate would then own all the rights to all Marvel characters and have more options for future stories and adventures.

Sony Pictures and Disney have had several very public disputes over various uses of characters from the Spider-Man franchise and it makes sense that the studios would both be looking to limit issues with intellectual property (IP) use. Should Disney follow through with the purchase it would likely mean they would acquire/absorb the entire company since they would be looking to gain the rights to all things Spider-Man. Sony currently has franchise investment in gaming, film, and television, so purchasing only a portion of the company would not give Disney access to all rights, thus making a total acquisition the most probable.

This would not be the first time Disney and Sony have sat down to discuss the use of Spider-Man, which has allowed Disney to use Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in films, Disney Parks attractions, merchandise, television, and more. The older animated shows are also available to stream via Disney+. As Disney CEO Bob Chapek recently shared during the Q3 Earnings Report, Disney is moving their primary focus on direct-to-consumer content (aka Disney+) so having even more exclusive content and beloved IP is a huge win for Disney.
