Disney is taking full control over Hulu

Disney and Comcast have just announced a new deal which Disney will assume full control of Hulu, that goes into place today. In the next five years, Comcast has agreed to sell its stake in Hulu to Disney for at least $9.2 billion.

The two companies are entering into what is called a “put/call” agreement, which means that there is a five-year tentative contract in place, then as early as 2024, Comcast can require Disney to purchase NBCUniversal’s 33% ownership stake. Likewise, at that time, or Disney could require NBCUniversal to sell their stake at fair market value.

According to Comicbook another big piece of this puzzle is the streaming rights to all of NBCUniversal’s content. In addition to the agreement, Comcast has agreed to stream all of NBCUniversal’s content on Hulu until that 2024 time period.

No word on what that means for Disney’s new streaming service Disney+. Maybe we will see an option to add their service to Hulu when it releases later this fall.
