Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Getting Upgraded at Magic Kingdom?

A new permit hints at some updates coming to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland. The notice of commencement lists the address as 1305 Monorail Way, the location of the iconic shooting gallery attraction, and describes the project as “install projectors.” Maddox Electric Company, a frequent Disney collaborator, is handling the job, but Disney has yet to confirm what specific changes are in store.

Since opening in 1998, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has been delighting guests with its interactive gameplay, inspired by the opening sequence of Toy Story 2. The ride replaced Delta Dreamflight, which itself succeeded If You Had Wings, and still uses the original track layout. Notable uses of projection technology on the ride include the long tunnel where Emperor Zurg’s ship appears to be surrounded by space, creating a thrilling target-rich environment for guests, as well as the queue’s Buzz Lightyear animatronic, which features a digitally animated face. The new projectors could be destined for any of these areas—or perhaps all of them—to refresh the visuals and enhance the experience.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has become a Disney Parks staple, with versions in every Disney castle park around the globe—each with its own unique name and spin. However, change is on the horizon for some of its counterparts. The Tokyo Disneyland version, Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters, recently closed permanently and is set to be replaced by a Wreck-It Ralph-themed shooting attraction. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Disneyland version closed in 2017 to make way for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle!
