Disney Files Patent for Advanced Ride System Featuring Guest-Controlled Movement

Disney is once again innovating in the world of theme park attractions, filing a new patent for a groundbreaking “rider-controlled amusement park ride.” According to reporting by he Orlando Business Journal, this latest design integrates a force sensor within the ride vehicle, allowing guests to adjust the vehicle’s position or speed in real time by leaning forward or applying pressure to the sensor. The patent illustration showcases a vehicle reminiscent of a hang-glider, similar to those used in Disney’s iconic Soarin’ attractions. However, this technology has the potential to be applied across various types of vehicles, paving the way for more interactive and personalized ride experiences.

This patent follows another significant filing from April of this year, which detailed a potential revamp of the flying theater technology that powers Soarin’. In that earlier design, Disney outlined plans for a reimagined ride vehicle capable of delivering a more dynamic and “aggressive” experience. The patent described a system where riders could feel dips, dives, rolls, and even simulated turbulence as a cable-propelled vehicle navigates a curved track, tilting, pitching, and rolling to mimic the unpredictability of flight. This innovation could elevate the immersive experience of attractions like Soarin’ by offering a wider range of motion and more thrilling flight simulations.
