Disney Dreamlight Valley pivoting away from free-to-play model
Disney Dreamlight Valley is making major changes ahead of its global release on December 5. Originally set to transition to a free-to-play model upon launch, it has now decided to pivot to being offered only as a paid game with multiple pricing tiers, according to reporting by Variety. This decision is largely influenced by insights garnered during its year-long early access phase, and is a reversal from the assurances made at the launch of the beta that the game would be free-to-play upon full release.

Instead of going free-to-play as initially indicated, Disney Dreamlight Valley will have several priced tier levels. Additionally, players will have to purchase the game’s next significant update titled “A Rift in Time.”
The team behind the game, developed by Gameloft, explained the rationale behind this decision in a recent blog post. They emphasized their commitment to offering a premium gaming experience, with continued free content updates. While some purchases will require the in-game currency ‘Moonstones,’ players can earn these for free or opt to buy them.
Those who bought the game during its beta phase (Founder’s packs) will retain their access. These packs, which provided early access to the game, will no longer be available after December 4.
The pricing tiers will be as follows:
- Core Game: Priced at $39.99, this provides basic game access with no exclusive content or story-progressing expansion packs.
- Cozy Edition: A physical version priced at $49.99, available since October 27. It includes the core game and exclusive in-game items.
- Gold Edition: Digital and priced at $69.99, it offers the core game, exclusive items, and access to the “A Rift in Time” expansion. However, players with any tier of the Founder’s Pack will have to purchase this expansion separately at $29.99.

Additionally, those who claimed a Founder’s Pack will receive unique cosmetic items from the upcoming Gold Edition and an extra 2,500 Moonstones. However, this does not encompass the new expansion.
Gameloft and Disney are set to provide more details on the “A Rift in Time” expansion and other updates in a special event on November 1 at 1 p.m. ET. This will be streamed on platforms like Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook Live.
