Disney Launches Major Cast Member Retraining Initiative

If you’ve visited a Disney Park recently and felt like that legendary “Disney Magic” was just a little bit different, you aren’t alone—and Disney has been listening! During a recent business update at the Disneyland Resort, leadership announced a major “Hospitality Reset” designed to bring the parks back to the gold standard of service that Walt himself envisioned.

Disney leadership revealed a startling statistic: roughly 60% of current Cast Members were hired during the massive surge following the 2021 reopening. Because the parks needed to staff up so quickly, the traditional training was condensed.

The famous “Traditions” onboarding class—which usually immerses new hires in Disney history and emotional storytelling—was held virtually or in a shortened format. Furthermore, the focus for the last few years has been heavily weighted toward safety protocols and social distancing rather than the “soft skills” of high-level hospitality.

Back to Basics: Extending the Training

To fix this, Disney is rolling out a “Return to Fundamentals.” Here is what is changing for the teams that make the magic:

  • In-Person Traditions: The foundational “Traditions” class is returning to a high-energy, in-person experience to ensure every Cast Member feels the culture from Day 1.
  • Doubling Down on “Step Into the Magic”: For operations teams, the secondary training phase known as Step Into the Magic has been expanded from one day to two full days. This extra time is dedicated to role-modeling, anticipating guest needs, and empowering Cast Members to solve problems in the moment.
  • The SERVICE Model: Disney is re-introducing a refreshed “SERVICE” model for its leadership teams. Managers and Leads are being retrained first so they can coach frontline Cast Members on how to turn a standard interaction into a “Magical Moment.”

Focus on Young Families & Human Connection

With the upcoming launch of the Bluey Experience at Hollywood Studios and a major focus on “Cool Kids’ Summer” in 2026, Disney is specifically training Cast Members on how to assist families with small children. Whether it’s helping a parent juggle food trays or finding a creative way to occupy a toddler during a ride delay, the goal is to reduce “friction” and increase “connection.”

Celebrating the Magic: Cast Compliments

Disney also noted that guests are playing a part in this culture shift! Over 3 million mobile Cast Compliments have been sent through the official apps. Leadership is looking to expand this feature to make it even easier for you to recognize those Cast Members who go above and beyond.
