Disney Begins Early Development of Live-Action ‘The Aristocats’

After years of development rumors, the live-action ‘The Aristocats’ remake has started building a production team! Will Gluck and Keith Bunin have signed on to pen the script for Disney with Gluck acting as a producer for the film under his production company Olive Bridge Entertainment. The film is still in the early stages of development and Disney has not announced if the film will premiere in theaters or will become another Disney+ exclusive title.

For those who may not be familiar with the Disney Classic from 1970, here is a synopsis of ‘The Aristocats‘: “When a retired opera singer leaves her inheritance to her cat, Duchess (Eva Gabor), and Duchess’s three kittens, the woman’s butler drugs the cats and abandons them in the countryside in order to inherit the fortune himself. Lost in unfamiliar territory, Duchess and the kittens meet Thomas O’Malley (Phil Harris), an alley cat willing to help them return to their home in Paris. They meet several kooky characters along the way, including two English geese and an alley cat jazz band.”

Disney has been met with both praise and criticism from fans for its decision to keep producing “live-action remakes” of the Disney Classics. But with films such as Aladdin (2019) and The Lion King (2019) both reaching over $1 billion in the global box office, it is unlikely Disney will stop the trend any time in the near future.

No casting or plot details have been revealed at this time, but Deadline did report that the film will be formatted and filmed similarly to the Lady and the Tramp live-action remake from 2019. This is a developing story, so be sure to check back here at Chip and Company for updates and all things Disney!
