The D23 Expo featured a ton of news, but one of the details was left out about the upcoming live-action prequel to The Lion King. Now, Disney has shared that ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ will premiere on July 5th, 2024.

According to Director Barry Jenkins, the film will focus on a young Mufasa, and thanks to a teaser shared during the D23 Expo, it appears Timon will be the narrator of the film. Jenkins shared in a recent interview, “This is a story about how Mufasa rose to royalty. He was born an orphaned cub, and in this film we get to explore his journey into the circle of life. Mufasa is who he is because of the people he has around him, and I saw that in myself. I had to make this movie. Because when I was 14 I was raising two nephews and there was a VHS tape that we watched about 95 times in the span of two days.”
