Disney Confirms New Theatrical Release Date for Live-Action ‘Mulan‘. Newly appointed CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Chapek has confirmed Disney plans to keep the rescheduled release date for Disney’s live-action Mulan. The film was originally set to premiere on March 27th and has since been moved to July 24th due to theater closures caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Chapek was also asked about the potential that lower audience attendance may be an issue when releasing the new title, but he shared the sentiment that moviegoers have “pent-up” demand for new content and want a relative return to normalcy sharing, “I think it’s going to be a stair step situation, just like it’s going to be in our parks,” Chapek said. “I think there’s a lot of pent-up demand, on the other hand, that viewers, fans of movies want to go see. It really becomes only an issue on Friday night and Saturday night, and to a lesser extent, on Sunday night. So it doesn’t really push the limits of what would typically be seen as occupancy inside movie theaters until you get to those weekend evenings. And in that particular case, I think that can be managed. I think it will be up to our exhibitors who we partner with.”
“At Disney, we’re a bunch of optimists, and I think that’s a very good release date for this particular title,” he added, saying Disney must “balance people’s anxieties about going out in public with the pent-up demand.” Chapek added, “Whether you’re talking about movie theaters or whether you’re talking about theme parks, and as long as we can do so in a relatively safe, responsible way, I think that’s going to be important for the exhibitors to consider all factors when they make their decisions to open up.”
The Walt Disney Company freshly reopened Disneyland Shanghai on May 11th and Disney Parks fans flocked to the theme park to enjoy the magic of Disney though the Park ensured many new heath and safety measures were put in place to help keep guests safe including limited admission into the Disney Park. Disney has yet to announce when the other theme parks around the world will reopen.
“When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father.”
