Dick Van Dyke Explains Dual Role in Mary Poppins

Dick Van Dyke recently sat down with his Mary Poppins Returns co-star Lin-Manuel Miranda for ABC’s 20/20 special Mary Poppins Returns: Behind the Magic. He claimed that his famous dual-role as Bert the chimney sweep and banker Mr. Dawes, Sr. came at a more sizeable price than one would imagine!

“I had to go to Walt and ask him for the part. He wouldn’t give it to me,” Van Dyke explained. “I said, ‘I’ll do it for nothing.’ Actually, I had to give him $4,000 — I paid him to do the part and I’d do it again!” he said. In the sequel, Van Dyke makes a cameo as the son of Mr. Dawes, Sr. and even performs one of his signature dance routines. Don’t miss Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, coming to a theatre near you December 19th!
