Review: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ – A Marvel Cinematic Roller Coaster

The Marvel Cinematic Universe makes a thunderous return with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” its first release in over eight months. This latest installment might just be the most thrilling since “Avengers: Endgame.” The third Deadpool film introduces Ryan Reynolds’ wisecracking antihero to the MCU, alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine from the X-Men franchise. Together, they embark on a blood-soaked, R-rated, cameo filled multiverse adventure that more than lives up to fan expectations.

Deadpool’s mission to save his world hinges on finding a Wolverine, leading him to a version of Logan deemed “the worst” by Paradox, a disgruntled TVA employee. This particular Wolverine, considered a failure in his own world, brings a reluctant yet compelling dynamic to their partnership. The interplay of their contrasting personalities—Deadpool’s chaotic humor and Wolverine’s brooding — adds contrasting styles of characters and is one of the film’s highlights.

The overseer Paradox transports Deadpool and Wolverine to the Void, a desolate purgatory filled with characters long forgotten by fans (as seen in LOKI). This multiverse “trash heap” serves as a surreal and nostalgic backdrop, bringing back familiar faces from past superhero films. The reappearance of these characters, some beloved and others less so, creates a rich, eclectic environment that is a feast for both hardcore and casual fans of the Marvel Universe.

Emma Corrin’s portrayal of Cassandra Nova, the cold and calculating twin sister of Professor X, stands out as a formidable antagonist. Her ability to manipulate minds with her fingers adds a menacing edge, providing a significant challenge for our heroes. Corrin’s performance is both chilling and captivating, perfectly balancing the film’s blend of humor and dark themes.

The film’s cameos are skillfully integrated into the narrative, going beyond mere fan service. These appearances are not only a treat for longtime fans but are also crucial to the storyline. One particular cameo left me in tears of laughter, highlighting the film’s sharp wit. The production team worked hard to conceal many of the easter eggs that lie within, and try your best to avoid spoilers because if you can maintain the mystery of these cameos, you’ll enjoy your viewing all the more.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” excels in many areas while poking holes in the multiverse logic that has frankly plagued much of Phase 4 Marvel. Additionally, the film’s ability to transform the remnants of 20th Century Fox’s superhero franchises in unapologetic romp through the past, while it offers a unique opportunity for some of the biggest punchlines and missed opportunities in superhero movie history to finally get their due.

This film succeeds where many Phase 4 MCU entries have struggled. It adheres to a tried-and-true formula while simultaneously critiquing and parodying the shortcomings of its predecessors. This self-aware approach, combined with its embrace of absurdity and spectacle, makes “Deadpool & Wolverine” stand out in a crowded genre. Its irreverent tone and boundary-pushing humor provide a refreshing contrast to the often overly serious superhero fare.

Ryan Reynolds once again proves his mastery of the Deadpool character, delivering a performance that balances manic energy with surprising emotional depth. Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine is equally compelling, bringing a grizzled charm and weariness that complements Reynolds’ exuberance. Their on-screen chemistry is electric, making their interactions a joy to watch.
