D23 Expo: The Marvel Panel

D23 Expo: The Marvel Panel

Sunday was the last day of the D23 Expo, so they had to make sure that they’re last arena panel was big. So what better way then to let Marvel take the stage? Joe Quesada, Marvel’s editor-in-chief, took the stage to do a special panel that would explain the history of Marvel’s company and talk a little bit about what we would be seeing from them in the future. Then immediately following that, audience members we’re allowed to ask him questions about anything and he would provide them with the best answers he could.

Joe Quesada had a very fun, and very laid back feel, that really helped make the panel much more easy going. The panel started with a look back over the years of Marvel comics, and how it started in 1939 as Timely Comics. Eventually Stan Lee left the company and created Marvel, with it’s first characters being the Fantastic Four. Quesada went on to say that Marvel ultimately wants to be the World’s story tellers, and that the comics are now printed in twenty-two languages, all over the world. He talked a little bit about what makes Marvel, well, Marvel, and what sets them apart from other companies. The biggest difference is that we care about Marvel characters, because they are real people like us. We relate to them, making them so much more than just a person in a mask. Essentially, every issue should be a story about the heroes real life, and then have the side with them fighting crime as their alter ego. Also, when Disney bought Marvel, they promised the two companies would still work independently from each other, and now Marvel is just backed by Disney to realize their full potential, much like the Disney and Pixar relationship.

Quesada then focused on how the company is changing with it’s movie studio and entering the digital realm of comics. He talked about how important it was that the characters in their movie universe had to be connected, and then showed us, in order, all the after credits scenes from Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America. He said with each one, you began to understand that there was always something bigger coming on the horizon, and when we got to The Avengers teaser, the crowd went nuts. As the clips came to an end, Quesada said that they’re is so much more that he’s excited about what’s on the burners at the moment, and that we should be hearing more soon. We then moved on to how Marvel is handling the digital age of comics, and he said Marvel has the largest back library in any digital form right now. They want people to still enjoy comics, and are moving with the times to make sure we can access the comics whenever we want.

As the panel came to a close, fans were able to ask Quesada any questions they had. A few tidbits that came out that, which were very interesting, included the fact that there has been talks about Marvel and the Disney parks, but there wasn’t much more he could say on that front. Quesada also said that for right now, don’t hold your breath to see Marvel Studios films crossing over with the Spider-Man and X-Men films. The rights are still with other studios right now and we won’t be seeing it anytime soon.

Overall, the panel was very interesting look for new fans and old fans a like. Joe was very honest, and really just fun to listen to. I was very impressed about how they handled it, and I’m glad to see them reaching out to a new audience. Marvel is going to be a great partner for Disney, and I can’t wait to see where they go from here.
