Could 'John Carter' Be in Trouble of Getting a Sequel?

‘John Carter’ fans, don’t get your hopes set for a sequel just yet. After a name change, a string of reshoots in April, and rumors of the budget ballooning over $300 million, it looks like the movie is still far from the finish line of starting a franchise. Andrew Stanton, director of the film, has envisioned ‘Carter’ to be the beginning of a trilogy, chronicling the events of John Carter’s adventures in the ‘Barsoom’ series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The first book,  ‘A Princess of Mars’,  is the novel this movie is adapted from.   A recent report stemming from the New York Magazine suggests that in order for Disney to even begin considering a sequel, it’s going to have to make a huge chunk of change back. Just how much is that number? Find out after the break.

New York Magazine is reporting that in order for ‘John Carter’ to get it’s sequel, the movie will have to make at least $700 million worldwide to even become profitable. If the movie doesn’t make that much, a sequel may be out of the question. To put this in perspective, that would mean the movie would have to land in the top fifty grossing movies of all time, somewhere in the range of the first ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Transformers’. Now, the sequel isn’t completely out of the question since the film is in 3D, which will help the movie make some extra money. But it’ll be quite the uphill battle for ‘John Carter’ to get to that mark. On the plus side, word is that test screenings of the film are going very well, with many walking out saying the movie is great to excellent. So there is still hope yet for the further adventures of John Carter, but if you’re interested in the series continuing, then make sure you go out and support the movie in March when it’s released. I know I will be, and hope to see Stanton complete the series as trilogy, then it ending prematurely as a standalone film.

‘John Carter’ stars Taylor Kitsch as the titular hero, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church, and Mark Strong. The film will be journeying into theaters March 9, 2012. Be on the look out for it!
