Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser to Become Imagineering Headquarters 2

Disney Files Construction Permit for Former Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Building

The next chapter for the former Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is officially underway. Disney has filed a new construction permit for the building, confirming plans to transform the once-groundbreaking immersive resort into office space for Walt Disney Imagineering.

The permit, filed on August 26, is labeled under “Project H” and lists “general construction” as its scope of work. Balfour Beatty Construction, a company Disney has frequently partnered with on large-scale projects, is handling the work. The permit is valid for one year and covers the Galactic Starcruiser property at 201 S Studio Drive, the official address of the now-closed Starcruiser.

This isn’t the first time permits have been filed on the site. A similar “general construction” permit with a different contractor was issued back in January 2024. But earlier this year, Disney confirmed that the space would indeed be repurposed into offices for Imagineering. Once complete, the building will serve as a hub for upcoming expansion projects currently in development across Walt Disney World, including Tropical Americas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Piston Peak at Magic Kingdom, and the Monsters, Inc. attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Galactic Starcruiser itself had a short but impactful run. Debuting on March 1, 2022, the cruise-style, two-night immersive Star Wars experience promised guests a chance to live out their own galactic adventure. The interactive storytelling and live entertainment were praised as groundbreaking, but the steep pricing and limited repeatability led to dwindling bookings. After just a year and a half, the experience officially closed on September 30, 2023.

Since its closure, speculation swirled over what Disney would do with the unique building. While CEO Bob Iger reportedly rejected proposals to retheme the space for new guest experiences, Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro had previously teased that “something will happen” with the property. Now, it seems that “something” is a creative hub fueling the future of Walt Disney World itself.
