Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers Review coming to Disney+ on May 20th

“Ch-ch-ch-Chip ‘N’ Dale! Rescue Rangers!”

A new Disney+ movie debuts this week featuring a famous pair of chipmunks. Keep reading our non-spoiler movie review to see what we thought of the movie!

Can you believe it’s been 33 years since this show first aired on TV?! Chip ‘N’ Dale Rescue Rangers premiered on March 4, 1989. Those who grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons will remember this classic show! DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, and Gummi Bears were some of the classic Disney Afternoon shows of the 1980s/1990s era. But Chip ‘N’ Dale Rescue Rangers was certainly a great cartoon series on its own right!

Chip and Dale have been causing mischief for the classic Disney characters since 1943, but became the Rescue Rangers in 1989 with the release of Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers. The cartoon was a success and sparked a 3 season television series, with the characters wearing outfits inspired by Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and Magnum P.I (Tom Selleck).

A comeback 30 years in the making, the hybrid live-action/CG animated action-comedy catches up with the former Disney Afternoon television stars in modern-day Los Angeles.

In “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers,” Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (voice of Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale (voice of Sandberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former castmate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life.

There’s No Case Too Big, No Case Too Small

Disney+’s new movie is reminiscent of Who Framed Roger Rabbit in both story and visual effects. The story features cartoon characters as actors in the real world. Also, the humor includes a lot of sight gags and jokes involving pop culture. Watching the Disney+ movie made us laugh and there’s a ton of hilarious cartoon cameos.

In all honesty, this movie is definitely aimed at adult Disney fans who grew up on the cartoon. It’s similar to how the first Wreck-It Ralph had jokes aimed at gamers. If you consider yourself an adult Disney fan who grew up with this cartoon, or if you adore the Roger Rabbit movie, then the new Disney+ movie is right for you!

The hybrid live-action/CG comedy stars John Mulaney and Andy Samberg as the chipmunk duo. Others joining the cast include: KiKi Layne, Will Arnett, Eric Bana, Dennis Haysbert, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, J.K. Simmons, and Chris Parnell.

“Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” premieres May 20, 2022, exclusively on Disney+.
