According to Zoo officials, Willow’s health declined over the past several days despite intensive veterinary treatment and around-the-clock supportive care. After carefully monitoring her condition, veterinarians made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize her to prevent further suffering.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Willow,” said Central Florida Zoo CEO Richard Glover. “Our animal care teams devoted countless hours to providing compassionate care. While this outcome is heartbreaking, we take comfort in knowing Willow received the highest level of care and support from a team that was fully committed to her well-being.”

Willow was one of 13 sloths transferred to the Central Florida Zoo on April 24 following the closure of Sloth World. Since their arrival, Zoo veterinarians, animal care teams, and sloth experts from across the country have worked tirelessly to provide specialized treatment and rehabilitation for the rescued animals. Willow’s passing marks another difficult loss in the Zoo’s ongoing effort to care for the group.

The Zoo confirmed that eight rescued sloths remain in their care: Chewy, Dolce, Phantom, Blackberry, Hazel, Leeloo, Mojo Jojo, and Pearl. All continue to remain in quarantine, where they are receiving close monitoring, veterinary care, and any treatments needed as their recovery continues. Zoo officials say maintaining a low-stress environment remains critical to supporting the surviving sloths during this challenging process.

Our thoughts are with the dedicated animal care team at the Central Florida Zoo as they continue their mission to provide the best possible care for these rescued sloths.
