The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is considering lowering the physical distancing requirement from 6 feet to 3 feet.

The CDC is reviewing a study out of Massachusetts that concludes there is “no significant difference” in physical distancing by three feet versus six feet. Almost all of the study’s participants wore masks. Dr. Anthony Fauci said the data suggests that 3 feet is a safe distance. He also shared that the CDC is conducting its own studies on physical distancing.

“What the CDC wants to do is accumulate data, and when data shows ability to be 3 feet, they will act accordingly,” Fauci said.

Currently, the CDC recommends at least 6 feet for physical distancing, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 1 meter (roughly 3 feet), and the UK recommends 2 meters.

At Walt Disney World and other Disney theme parks around the world, physical distancing of 6 feet is currently required. Markers are placed on the ground as well as signs posted throughout the parks to help guests remember to stay 6 feet from other parties. This does cause some congestion issues at times when lines get long at the parks. Reducing the physical distancing requirement to 3 feet could help with those issues and could even allow parks to increase capacity limits.
