Reaction to Disney Bonuses

Earlier this week, the Walt Disney Company announced that they will be paying out a $1,000 cash bonus   to 125,000 full- and part-time non-executive employees.

It was also announced that the company will invest $50 million this year, and $25 million in subsequent years, for training and education for hourly workers.

These announcements have been met with mixed reviews from Cast Members. In an article from The Orange County Register, some union representatives state that they are worried that because of wording within the press release issued by Disney not everyone may see the bonus or that it may be used as a bargaining chip in the future.

Ada Briceño, co-president of UniteHere Local 11, which represents more than 2,000 Disneyland hotel workers said, “We are very disappointed.  We are bargaining to bring our workers out of poverty. Most of them make between $11 and $13 an hour. Disney should distribute the bonus to all its employees, separate from any contract negotiations.”

“We are disappointed with union leaderships’ reaction to an offer that hasn’t been fully discussed or vetted yet,” said Suzi Brown, a Disneyland spokeswomen.  She also declined to comment on if union members would automatically be eligible for the bonuses under the same terms non-unionized employees would be.

The debate has spread to social media where those both celebrating the bonus and while others called it a PR stunt.
