Disney’s highly anticipated Cars expansion at Magic Kingdom has hit a minor roadblock as the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has returned Disney’s initial permit application and is requesting additional information and modifications before Disney can re-submit. The permit, which was a necessary early step in preparing the land for the new Cars-themed area, requested additional information and revisions before the project can move forward. This delay centers around modifications to the stormwater management system behind Tom Sawyer Island and Big Thunder Mountain, key areas that will be impacted by the expansion.

While this type of back-and-forth is typical for large-scale projects like this, especially those with environmental considerations, it has caused a slight pause in the timeline for Disney. Construction on the Cars-themed area was originally scheduled to begin in early 2025, but it remains to be seen how long this review process will delay the start.
