Capturing Disney in Pictures: Ceremonial House Waterfall at The Polynesian Resort

Every photo has a story.

Back on October 1, 1971, when Walt Disney World first opened, there were only two operational resorts: The Contemporary and The Polynesian.  Few people realize that while these deluxe hotels appear as fairly opposite buildings at first glance, they are almost identical in terms of structure.  These two iconic vacation havens were designed by the architectural firm Welton Becket & Associates.  Both manufactured for Disney by the U.S. Steel Corporation, they were engineered using a modular construction system that was highly innovative in the early ’70’s.

On one of the Disney vacation days when you find yourself without park tickets, hop a monorail and take a tour of the South Pacific themed Polynesian Resort.

Picture this…8,500 plants are used at the Polynesian each year.  They do more interior planting than any other Disney resort.  All these plants are amassed from over 3,000 different species, showcasing a plant species from every continent in the world except Antarctica.

If you haven’t exhausted your feet walking down Main Street, you can view the  magnificent landscaping, both interior and exterior, by walking to the Polynesian Resort via a sidewalk from the Ticket and Transportation Center.  There is also a 1.5 mile walking trail that starts at the Polynesian and continues on to the Shades of Green Resort.  You’ll feel like you’ve taken a magical journey onto the South Pacific islands, far from roller coaster lines and noisy crowds.  What’s more, this walking  journey is absolutely free!

Before you begin your walking tour, spend some time inside the Great Ceremonial House, because the centerpiece waterfall is an amazing artwork of 75 different plant varities cascading off volcanic stone.

Thanks for stopping by for a photographical Disney ride!

  1. I love looking at the waterfall in the Great Ceremonial House. It is so pretty! I had no idea about the walking trail. Thanks for sharing! I’ll have to check it out next time I’m there.
