From Bean to Bear: The Story Behind Captain Cacao at Universal Epic Universe
When it comes to world-building, Universal Creative doesn’t just paint the walls and call it a day, they fill every corner with a story waiting to be discovered. Nowhere is that more deliciously true than in Celestial Park’s Moonship Chocolates & Celestial Sweets, home to the park’s newest original character: Captain Cacao.

This dark chocolate teddy bear — complete with a white chocolate star over his eye, a jaunty blue captain’s hat, and an orange-and-gold sash — didn’t just sail into the park on a whim. He’s the result of months of collaboration between the Universal Creative Design team and the Universal Products & Experiences crew, who dreamed up a backstory that ties into every detail of the whimsical shop.
Captain Cacao’s tale begins with Maya of the Skies, an adventurous young explorer born in Celestial Park. With a sweet tooth that could rival any chocoholic, Maya set out aboard her Marshmallow Airship Joei de Ganache to scour the universe for the finest ingredients. Along the way, Captain Cacao became her trusty navigator, ensuring every marshmallow star-powered voyage returned with the tastiest treasures from the cosmos. Inside the shop, guests can even spot artifacts from their journeys, including a map charting stops like the Navis Bananas Nebula and the Seven-Layer Belt.
The storytelling doesn’t end with the décor. Team members greet every visitor as “explorers” and share the lore behind Maya and Captain Cacao, creating an experience that feels less like shopping and more like stepping inside a living adventure. Of course, the exclusive merchandise helps seal the deal — from the must-have Captain Cacao plush to backpacks, bucket hats, and sweets inspired by the duo’s galactic travels.
As Assistant Merchandise Manager Freddy Rojas-De Oliveira puts it, “I don’t think guests expect to walk into an airship candy store with more sweet treats than you could ever imagine would be in one space.” Whether you’re there for the story, the sweets, or the merch, you’ll leave with more than a souvenir — you’ll take home a piece of Celestial Park’s magic.
