The Orange County Register is reporting that California will be releasing theme park reopening guidelines this week.
According to Jesse Melgar, press secretary for Gov. Gavin Newsom, California will issue reopening guidelines for theme parks this week. Guidelines will be issued by the California Department of Public Health.
California Health and Human Services spokesperson Rodger Butler said, “Theme park guidance is expected to come from CDPH this week. Theme parks will be incorporated into the Blueprint for a Safer Economy similar to other sectors.”
California theme parks, including Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood, have been closed since March due to COVID-19. Governor Newsom said last month that reopening guidelines would be issued “very very shortly”.
Earlier this week Disney announced it would be laying off 28,000 employees. Disney officials partly blamed Newsom and his administration’s failure to issue reopening guidelines for the layoffs.
Disney parks chairman Josh D’Amaro said that the impact of COVID-19 has been “exacerbated in California by the State’s unwillingness to lift restrictions that would allow Disneyland to reopen.”
Disney officials along with California state and city leaders have been urging Newsom and his administration to issue guidelines so theme parks can reopen safely.
We will update as soon as more information is made available so stay tuned.
