TGIF Characters

Character Meals at Disney World are the best in my book – nothing is better than getting to meet and mingle with a bunch of characters – and when you add food to that, well – I’m a happy camper! But, as with everything else, there are a few downsides to character meals – they tend to be crowded and loud, and full of families and kids running everywhere – which I know can turn some people off of them. If you’re someone who doesn’t like character meals or has had a bad experience at one in the past, I urge you to read on, and check out my reasons why you should book at least one character meal for your next WDW trip:

The Food: The cuisine at character meals is among the best I’ve had at Disney World – The Crystal Palace offers a buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and all meals offer freshly prepared dishes and some unique items you can’t find anywhere else (like Pooh’s Breakfast Lasagna). If buffets aren’t your favorite, then don’t worry – there are some great table service character meals out there too – like Cinderella’s Royal Table – melt in your mouth prime rib at dinner, plus some amazing breakfast choices too – like quiche, lobster and crab crepes, and cream cheese stuffed French toast. Garden Grill in Epcot serves up a “family style” dinner – which means they bring platters of items off a set menu to your table (and they will bring refills too!) for you to enjoy, and in this case it’s items like fresh, warm bread, roasted turkey, fresh fish, and fresh vegetables. You can even order wine made with organically grown grapes here! Bottom line is – the food at character meals is awesome – and it comes in more forms than just a buffet

The Characters: Obviously at a character meal, you expect to see characters (duh!), but instead of having to wait in a long line in the blazing sun and then getting to meet only 1 (or MAYBE 2 if you’re lucky) character – these meals bring them to you! That’s right – the characters circulate around to all the tables, and there’s usually around 3-5 different ones at any given meal. It might take a while (usually an hour or so), but they WILL come to your table – so sit back, relax, and enjoy your food, and when the characters come closer make sure you have your cameras and autograph books ready! Character meals are a great place to get to meet several characters at once, and bonus – you’re inside, sitting down and enjoying a meal all at the same time!

The Experience: No matter how old you are, there’s always that bit of anticipation when you spot your favorite character. Maybe as you get older you don’t jump up and down and shout “OMG IT’S MICKEY!!!!” (or maybe you do?), but either way, it’s exciting to get to see these famous characters that you have loved watching in movies and cartoons. Aside from meeting the characters, the cast members always play along too – telling you who the characters are that you will get to meet, asking you who is your favorite – it’s a great time for everyone. At places like Cinderella’s Royal Table, they even treat you like “royalty” as you are called for your table, and then they have a whole fanfare to announce the arrival of the Princesses. Even if characters aren’t your thing – it’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement that is a WDW character meal
